One of my favorite regions in France, and where I used to live a few years ago, is Brittany. This windy Celtic province always offers interesting landscapes and amazing lights, especially on the shore !

Exploring its islands is definitely a good idea, and it comes with a particular feeling. It’s always very quiet, with a lot of people riding bikes. The biggest of them is called Belle-Île, which literally means Pretty Island, and is one of my favorites so far.

I went there with a few friends of mine during the summertime, and once again I just couldn’t go without taking a camera with me 🙂

As much as I enjoy resting on the beach, enjoying the sun, I can’t help myself when I see a good opportunity to walk around, climb some rocks, try to find a good frame and shoot. Even if I don’t find one, it never hurts having a walk.

In this case I did find what I was looking for, but it didn’t look really outstanding. I stayed there for less than a minute, took a few pictures, and just when I was about to move to a new location, this sailboat moved into my frame, instantly becoming my main subject. I hadn’t thought about it before but now it was so obvious that this was the thing I should have been looking for from the beginning. I tried to keep the boat a bit out of focus by choosing an intermediate aperture and focusing on the foreground. This way it is a bit soft and I think it fits well the fact that a few seconds later it was gone.

The island is fairly large (around 17km long) and not really flat, so if you choose to go by bike it can be sometimes challenging but definitely rewarding. Fortunately at the end of the day you can find good places to chill, either on the beach or in one of the small towns there. I didn’t expect it to be this way, but nightlife was pretty interesting too, with concerts, people dancing, fireworks (then again, we were there in mid august and in France we have a few celebrations at the time of the year).

Or you can simply grab a few drinks and go hang around on the harbor, meet people, chat and laugh while watching a gorgeous moon rise 😀

All around it’s always a good way to relax, especially when you live in a big busy city and when -like me- you come to miss the sea every now and then. Wherever I go, Brittany will stay one of my solid values when it comes to escaping all this urban rush.
